Update: Tamper Resistant Paper and Printing


	By Natalie Slodowy, August 2008 A few months ago our newsletter contained an article outlining new legislation regarding tamper-proofing Medicaid prescriptions. We received many follow-up questions and would like to provide everyone with some more resources on getting them answered. There have been several questions regarding which types of printers can handle the tamper-resistant paper, as well as how the printing process is affected when a practice has an EMR. Below is a list of resources of printing and paper companies, and their approvals by state. Because each state was affected somewhat uniquely by this legislation, in terms of what was already in practice and what further regulations needed to be implemented, it is best to contact a local vendor regarding detailed questions you may have. Also, following is a simplified outline of the legislation, to answer general questions: “Effective April 1, 2008, Medicaid will require all written prescriptions for outpatient drugs, including those sold over the counter, to be on tamper-resistant prescription pads (or printer paper). The requirement does not apply to prescriptions submitted to the pharmacy via fax, e-prescribing, or telephone, or within long-term care facilities or hospitals where prescriptions are handled by a physician order.
